Shara Jaraba - The art of dressing tasteful-less-ly

We have this street in Tripoli called Shara Jaraba - and it is famous for expensive dress boutiques. Most Libyan women spend their lives going to parties and worrying about dressing for parties. Shara Jaraba is party dress heaven! The weird thing is that most of these party frocks are the ugliest things you can possibly imagine. Not only are they ugly, they are expensive and most of all for being a Muslim country - these dresses are definitely unsuitable too. But that doesn't stop the ladies from running out to spend a month or two's salary to acquire the perfect, sparkliest, gaudiest dress they can possibly find.

    My husband says one or two months salary was an understatement - he thinks more like 6 months salary for a dress. He better count his blessings - I just spend his money on computer stuff!
